Individual sessions with an occupational therapist to learn to ride a two-wheel bicycle safely without training wheels.

What?

Series of three to five 45-minute individual sessions with parent/guardian present to learn to ride a two-wheeled bicycle safely without training wheels. Sessions will be 1:1 with an occupational therapist

Who?

Children ages 5-9 years old who are able to pedal a tricycle or bicycle with training wheels and who are interested and motivated to learn to ride a two-wheeled bicycle.

When?

Sessions can be schedule daily for 1 week, weekly or bi-weekly.

Session 1: Assess basic balance and coordination (1 foot, crossing midline, running, etc.) and observe current bike riding skills.

Session 2: Practice two-wheeled bike skills using seat-mounted push handle, to work on pedaling, balance and build confidence.

Session 3: Continue building confidence with balance and introduce steering.

Session 4: Teach starting and stopping.

Session 5: Remove push-handle and increase confidence with starting, stopping and steering.

**Some children may move through these steps faster than others. Steps can be combined.

Equipment necessary – Families must bring this equipment each day

  • Two-wheel bicycle that allows child to stand over frame with feet flat on ground
  • Properly fitting bicycle helmet
  • Water bottle
